Missouri guide

Missouri resources for families of children with medically complex needs: Medicaid coverage, early intervention, specialty care services, and pediatric day-based care pathways.

This guide is under active development. We are verifying Missouri-specific sources. Content below reflects general publicly available information. Always confirm current eligibility, coverage, and requirements directly with the relevant Missouri agency, your payer, and your child's physician.

Missouri's care landscape in plain English

Missouri does not have a PPEC licensure category identical to Florida's. Families in Missouri navigating day-based care for medically complex children typically work through Missouri HealthNet (Medicaid), the Children's Special Health Care Services (CSHCS) program, and early intervention services under First Steps.

Private Duty Nursing (PDN) is available through Missouri HealthNet for eligible children who need skilled nursing care. Families should work with their child's care team and their health plan to identify which services are covered and appropriate.

Important note

Missouri's programs and eligibility rules differ from Florida's PPEC framework. Do not assume Florida PPEC guidance applies in Missouri. Confirm requirements with Missouri agencies directly.

What Missouri families should ask and verify

Physician

Start with your child's physician

Ask your child's pediatrician, specialist, or care manager what day-based care or skilled nursing services they recommend and what documentation is needed.

Payer

Contact MO HealthNet or your health plan

Ask what skilled nursing, day-based care, or home care services are covered, what prior authorization is required, and what documentation is needed.

Care coordination

Ask about care coordination services

Missouri CSHCS and some Medicaid managed care plans offer care coordinators who can help families identify services and navigate applications.

Educational note: Missouri programs, eligibility, and coverage rules can change. Always confirm current requirements directly with Missouri HealthNet, CSHCS, First Steps, your payer, and your child's physician. PDBHAI does not provide medical, legal, billing, or eligibility advice.
